About The Glasgow Group
Established in 1958 by a group of ambitious graduates from Glasgow School of Art, The Glasgow Group is run by Glasgow based artists to promote the visual arts in Glasgow and the West of Scotland.
Encompassing a variety of media, including painting, photography and printmaking, the group is financially supported by its own members along with donations from supporters. For the last sixty plus years the group has curated an annual exhibition in Glasgow and occasional portfolio shows of unframed work. Many of the group’s current and former members are represented in public, corporate, and private art collections.
Our Founding Story
Founded in the late 1950s, The Glasgow Group began as a radical alternative to the city’s rigid, traditional art establishment. Three visionary Glasgow School of Art alumni – James Morrison, Anda Paterson, and James Spence – spearheaded the cooperative to give emerging, contemporary voices a platform. Along with ten fellow pioneering artists, including figures like Alasdair Gray and Ian McCulloch, they staged their first group show at the McLellan Galleries in 1958, rewriting the rules of artist-led curation in Scotland, and cementing a legacy of creative solidarity that continues today.
