Claire Paterson

Claire Paterson graduated from the Glasgow School of Art Painting and Printmaking department in 2008, winning the inaugural Steven Campbell Hunt Medal for Poetic Creativity, the School of Fine Art Dissertation Prize, and the British Airways Travel Bursary – which she used to fund a trip around California, New Mexico, Arizona and Texas, doing research into the iconography of various religious groups in these states.

Paterson’s 2019 exhibition at GSA, The Arbitrary Ritual, was inspired by collaborations she undertook at Brooklyn’s International Studio and Curatorial Programme while on the 2016-17 Steven Campbell New York Scholarship. Since then, Claire has continued with this spirit of collaboration, inviting the subjects of her paintings to create their own new identities and mythologies through posing in a theatrical way – a method which often produces exciting and spontaneous results.
