The photographic studies of Muybridge [figures and animals in motion], the Futurists and Optical Art were the first to influence my work. This produced a series using the human figure and optical designs to suggest movement. In Italy I made studies of rock formations and olive trees, often combining both. In Scotland the rocks and debris found in the local river inspired another series of works.
At present I am working on a theme, The River Ayr Walk from Glenbuck to Catrine [former mill town]. I look for details such as old rusting posts or gates, sections of hedgerows, roots exposed by the water or debris gathered against trees. At first I keep close to the objects, then alter, change or abstract, often combining different elements. This can be difficult but the one I find challenging.
